Mrs Thompson Is on Holiday

Picture
09.06.12: Mrs Thompson, our school Receptionist/Librarian left EPS last Thursday to travel overseas with her husband Neville and our school 'travel buddy' Edge.

We are going to keep in contact with Mrs Thompson over the next five weeks.  She will send us travel updates every so often and photos of the many places that they will travel to.

Enjoy your holiday Mrs Thompson.  Make sure Edge is a good little travel buddy and goes to bed early each night.

Where in the World is Kuala Lumpar?

11.06.12: Edge has been having a wonderful time in Kuala Lumpur. He has been to see  the Twin Towers, the Blue Mosque, Batu Caves and out for a seafood dinner with our Malaysian friend.  The Twin Towers look like they are made of silver and shine in the sun. The Blue Mosque is the second largest in the world and can hold 24,000 people. We all had to wear special clothes to go in. The mosque is a place of prayer for muslims.

The Batu Caves are a special place for Hindu indians. We walked up 262 steps and there were lots of monkeys running around.
We are waiting at the airport for our flight to London. Hope you are all woking hard    - From Edge and Mrs T.

It's cold and rainy in London

Picture
13.06.12: After a long and tiring overnight flight Edge arrived in London to cold and rainy weather. He needed to rest up a bit for a little while before hitting the streets for a look around. The next morning he watched the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. He was very glad to have his scarf on that morning and was trying to sit up on the balcony for a better view. He was excited about riding on the top deck of a double decker bus with a good view of all the London Attractions. He checked out Westminster Abbey, where Prince William and Kate Middleton were married last year but got a bit of a fright when the clock in the Big Ben tower chimed. Then he cruised down the Thames River to the Tower of London where he had a good look at the Crown Jewels but wasn’t allowed to have his photo taken in there.

Next morning Edge had his first ride in the tube and then this kiwi did fly on the London Eye, which is a giant wheel that goes around very slowly and gives everybody a great view of London. Next was Trafalgar Square where he bravely posed next to the lions. I think he might be a little homesick as we spied him trying to phone home from a red telephone box. Next he decided to write and post a postcard in a red letter box.

Edge has an extra travelling companion. Her name is Colleen and she used to be a pupil and also a teacher aide at Edgecumbe Primary
School. She left about 14 years ago and is now working at Hillsmeade Primary School in south east Melbourne. Some of the students from that school may also log on to see what Edge is up to.  Edge will be travelling for a few days around England, going to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath. He will send you some photos when he next gets some wifi.            - From Edge, Mrs T and Colleen (with sore feet).

Edge hits England and Paris

Picture
19.06.12: Edge has had a busy few days. He was driven out of London to Windsor Castle. He was trying to see if the Queen was home in her personal apartment. Later while he was walking through the town of Windsor he was very excited to bump into Her Majesty in a shop.

After a little longer in the car he was amazed by the mystery of the large rocks at Stonehenge that have been there for about 5000 years. The next morning he followed the path of the early Romans and went to see where they enjoyed hot swims then drove up to Yorkshire in the middle of England.

Edge Checks Out The Hot Baths
Saturday was a very fast train ride underneath the English Channel to Paris, then followed by a very fast taxi ride. Poor Edge's head was spinning.
He needed a nice breakfast in a French Cafe the next morning to fully recover. His first day in Paris was spent walking around some shops and then Notre Dame Cathedral. He was very impressed by the old buildings and the sculptures.

Today Edge is exhausted after walking all day around the Louvre, down to the Arc de Triomphe and then to the Eiffel Tower. He paid his respects to the tomb of the unknown soldier underneath the Arc de Triomphe but then got a little bored waiting in line for over an hour to go up the Eiffel Tower. One lift had broken down but at least there was one working. Edge would have worn his poor little legs off walking up all those steps.

Edge enjoyed his last day in Paris by travelling out to Versailles, the palace of the Kings of France. He had to stand in line for over an hour to get in but really enjoyed the palace once he got in. He especially liked admiring himself in the Hall of Mirrors. Tomorrow Edge is travelling on another fast train over to St Malo, a old walled city on the coast of France.  He is eating very well and probably needs to walk just as much or he will be a porky Edge by the time he gets home.

Edge on the West Coast of France

24.06.12: Edge has been looking around St Malo, an old walled city on the west coast of France. It was destroyed in World War 2 and rebuilt in the original style of the 1600's.

He was a bit frightened by the big gun, but was much happier sitting on Mrs T's knee looking over the wall to the sea.

Edge was lucky to share an umbrella the next day when he went to Mont St Michael, built by the monks between the 13th -16th century on a rock out in the sea.  The tide around the island comes in and goes out at 1 metre per second, that's the fastest in the world!  There are some museums in the little village and Edge liked the knight in shining armour.

Edge was staying in the corner room on the top story in St Malo. If you look really hard you will see him at the window. On the longest day of the year, it is traditional in France to have lots of music in the streets. Edge enjoyed some lovely singing in the square below his window.

Today Edge drove along the Loire Valley to see the chateaux and visited Chateau Villandry's beautiful gardens. He checked out where all the vegetables were growing because Whaea Jeanette told him he had to make sure he ate all his while on holiday.  - Love from Mrs T and Edge.

Edge enjoys more time in France

26.06.12: Edge has been seeing a lot of different things. He visited Chateau Chenenceau and was trying to figure out how it was built in the middle of a river in the 1600's. No cranes then.

Edge liked driving over the longest viaduct in the world near Millau in the south of France. Next he visited an arena in Arles, which is being restored back to what it was like when it was built in the 1st century They use it for bull fighting sometimes.

Today Edge went up Mt Ventoux, one of the highest mountains in the south of France. The Tour de France bike up there sometimes. It is very steep and windy with narrow roads. Mrs T had her eyes closed. He stopped on the way up to have a look in the lavender fields. Poor Edge was getting a bit grubby so he was next seen in a laundromat, waiting for his clothes to be washed. Love from Mrs T and Clean Edge!

Edge is in France...still...

28.06.12: Edge travelled from Avignon down to Cannes, Grasse and Nice today. He admired all the big boats at Cannes with Mr T and then had to cover his eyes with his scarf when he looked out to the beach as he could have been shocked at what he might see! There might have been people with hardly any clothes on!
Then Edge went to Grasse, the perfume capital of the world and helped Mrs T and Colleen choose some nice perfumes for their girls. He got a bit overwhelmed with all the smells so he stayed in Mrs Ts bag.  He arrived in Nice and is looking forward to a walk along the Promenade tomorrow.

Edge also walked the red carpet for the Cannes film festival. He was a couple of weeks late but was still on the lookout for someone famous.  - From Mrs T and Edge.

Edge enjoys the sun in France

29.06.12: Edge has been enjoying lots of sun in the south of France. He nearly had to take his jacket off. He might be a suntanned Edge when he gets home. Edge went for a ride on a little train all around the old part of Nice, which dates back about 4000 years. He stopped up at the old fort and looked out over Nice and the Mediterranean Sea. He was driven along some narrow windy roads and through some rocky tunnels to Monaco today. He even went on some of the streets that are used for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Edge admired a beautiful red ferrari outside the casino but he was very careful not to touch as there were lots of security guards around. Unfortunately he was too young to go into the casino. Instead he walked around the back of the casino and looked at a very colourful helipad and a big cruise ship moored in with lots of other expensive boats We think he would have liked a cruise around the Mediterranean. to cool off a bit.

Today is our last day in France and then we are off to Switzerland.  Edge wishes everyone at EPS (and Hillsmeade) a safe and happy holiday and will continue his adventures until 10th July. - Love from a hot and sweaty Edge.

Edge moves on to Switzerland

01.07.12: Edge had a big day driving through France up to Lausanne in Switzerland. He stopped in a tiny little French village called
Castellane where he tried to look up at the little church on top of the rock. He wondered how anyone could get up there. He then drove through the Gorges of Verdon with very steep rocky mountains and little villages dotted on some of the slopes.

Picture
Today Edge had a short drive through lots of tunnels, some up to 3 km long, to Basel, which is a city in the corner of Switzerland, Germany and France.  He had a lovely boat ride on the Rhine and did some shopping with Mrs T and Colleen. He saw lots of people floating down the river
on the hot afternoon and saw some lovely swiss chalets. Public transport is free for visitors so Edge had a long tram ride around the city. - From Mrs T and Edge.

'Edgiano' in Venice

Picture
Edge has been busy touring around Salzburg and down to Venice. While he was in Salzburg he went on a Sound Of Music tour. He loved looking around the Mirabelle Gardens where lots of the movie was filmed. He enjoyed the singalong on the bus. He even knew most of the words to the songs.

The next day Edge was driven through some  very high mountains to Venice where his driver parked the car and everyone caught a water bus to the hotel in Venice as all of Venice is on an island, surrounded by water and you have to get around in boats only.

Edge had a good look around St Marks Square in the middle of Venice and marvelled at all the beautiful marble and gold inside the church. He looked over the boats and gondolas in the Grand Canal from the top of the Rialto Bridge. He then went shopping with the girls to buy
some of the famous Murano Glass and some presents for their girls. He was really hoping for a gondola ride with some lovely singing. Maybe tomorrow.......?  Edge was a bit hot and sweaty today so a nice boat ride would cool him down nicely. - Love from Edgiano in Venice.

Edge is still in Italy

Picture
06.07.12: Bon Giornio,
Edge is still in Italy. He loved his gondola ride in Venice but was a little disappointed that none of his travelling companions would break into song. He did see the house where a very famous composer called Mozart was born.

Edge then travelled right across Italy to the west coast, to Cinque Terre; a group of 5 little villages built on rocky cliffs along the coastline. He travelled by train between the villages and then by boat back to the first village. He liked looking at all the small fishing boats lining the streets. They needed a pulley system to get them down to the water. It was very hot so he had to take his scarf off. The houses are very old and painted lots of different colours. Edge is really enjoying Italian food and is still doing lots of walking in hot humid weather. He needs to have lots of cool drinks so he doesn't get dehydrated. - Arrividerci from suntanned Edge.

Edge enjoys the sights of Italy

12.07.12: Edge has been seeing some amazing sights in Italy. He tried to push the Leaning Tower of Pisa over but all the strengthening work over the last few years is working well. The building was started in the 1100's and took 200 years to complete. It started sinking before they finished building it. Edge also admired the beautiful baptistry next door.

From there Edge went to a beautiful Tuscan villa to chill out by the pool. He loved the view from across a valley covered in grape vines and olive trees to the medieval village called San Gimignano.Watching the sun set beside the pool with his travelling companions was very relaxing.

Time to fight off the Gladiators!
Picture
Next was Rome where Edge was glad to be hiding in Mrs T's bag on a very fast taxi ride into the city.  He enjoyed a bus ride around the city and visted the Colosseum which was built in 70 AD and was the place for gladiator games. On the way out he had to bravely help fight some gladiators he met. It was very hot in Rome - far too hot to wear his scarf so a stop at the Trevi Fountain was a bit cooler. Mrs T and Collen threw in some coins and made a wish.

Edge is now winging his way back to Edgecumbe. He would like to thank his travelling compnions; Mr and Mrs T, Colleen and her husband Max, the driver. He is very pleased Mrs Murphy let him go on such a big trip and lastly a big thank you to everyone who has been following his travels at Edgecumbe Primary School, Hillsmeade Primary School and all the family and friends of his travelling companions, - Arrividerci from a very well travelled Edge.
